Tours & Things to Do in Kamakura, Japan

Kamakura is the obvious Tokyo day-trip after Nikko — the Great Buddha, the hydrangea-lined Hase-dera stairs, Enoshima's island-temple-beach combo, and the Enoden tram that feels straight out of a Ghibli storyboard. Walking tours here typically string together four or five spots that look close on a map but involve steep hillside paths; having a guide sort the order saves an hour of backtracking. June's hydrangea season is gorgeous but packed; November's maple colours at Hokoku-ji's bamboo grove are the quiet pick. Surf culture is real in Enoshima — factor it in if you want a split beach/shrine day.
