Free Wi-Fi in Japan: plan your first connection and the journey beyond it

Free Wi-Fi is available at verified locations; plan separately for the parts of your journey between them. Start with your arrival airport’s instructions, prepare essential information before flying, and decide which tasks need a personal connection after you leave the terminal.

Official sources checked October 16, 2026. This guide covers preparation, not live network availability, device setup or a ranking of paid providers.

Verified hotspots or a personal connection?

JNTO’s connectivity guidance describes airport hotspots, accommodation checks, pocket Wi-Fi and travel SIM options. Choose from your actual tasks rather than assuming one method fits every trip.

Checking information at planned stops
Record the airport, accommodation or other operator’s current Wi-Fi instructions. Confirm access at the place you will use, including any registration or session conditions. A hotspot at a station does not establish a connection on the street outside.
Needing online access while moving between stops
Check a personal option with your carrier or provider: overseas mobile data, a compatible SIM/eSIM, or a portable router. Resolve device compatibility, activation, data allowance, coverage and charges before relying on it. For a rented device, include collection and return arrangements. This guide does not select a product or promise coverage.
Travelers separating from one another
Make a connection and meeting plan for each person. If your plan depends on a shared device, decide what happens when the group separates or its battery runs out. Keep the meeting place and accommodation address available without a new online search.

Connect using your actual airport’s instructions

Narita Airport

The airport publishes FreeWiFi-NARITA for its terminals and terminal shuttle buses. Select that network on a Wi-Fi-enabled device; the operator describes an automatic connection screen with its Terms and Conditions of Use and Security Caution. Read the current screen before deciding whether to proceed. Speed can be affected by the environment and congestion.

Haneda Airport

For terminals 1, 2 and 3, the operator lists HANEDA-FREE-WIFI: select the network, open a browser and follow the on-screen instructions. Its page identifies shop exclusions, with lounges excepted, and warns that connection can be difficult in some areas. Use the conditions for your terminal.

If selecting the network has not produced internet access, compare what you see with the airport’s current instructions. Check the local signs or airport assistance if the expected connection screen is unavailable. Do not infer that an unfamiliar similarly named network is the airport service. A listed service cannot establish a working connection at every inspection point or within a train-connection deadline.

Separate onboard Wi-Fi from station access points

JR Central’s current service page lists Shinkansen_Free_Wi-Fi inside Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen trains. It describes email or social-account registration and a new login every 30 minutes. Its station service has different access-point locations and conditions; this is not an all-Japan railway network.

The operator’s March 12, 2026 service-change notice announced discontinuation at listed conventional-line stations from March 31. It separately retains service at Tokaido Shinkansen stations and onboard Tokaido Shinkansen, Hida and Nanki trains. Check the current notice and the actual operator for your journey; neither “JR station” nor “Shinkansen” alone identifies the available hotspot.

Prepare the correct train ticket, boarding format and collection before the journey. Finding Wi-Fi does not resolve an uncollected ticket or an unlinked boarding card.

Finish these checks while your current connection works

  1. Arrival information: keep your accommodation address, meeting details and first transport instructions available on the device you will carry.
  2. Arrival declaration: follow the official Visit Japan Web offline preparation in advance. Some functions require an online login or connection; a saved image is not a universal substitute.
  3. First connection: record the airport’s current network and instructions. Check your accommodation’s Wi-Fi directly instead of assuming it from its category or location.
  4. Between-stop access: resolve any personal mobile-service or rental-device requirements before you need them. Keep a fallback for a failed connection.
  5. Power and payment: check your charger label and plug and keep a physical payment and cash-access fallback. Power, internet access and payment acceptance are separate checks.

Write your own sequence: prepared arrival information → verified first hotspot → between-stop connection plan → power and offline fallback. Recheck it when the itinerary or device changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there free Wi-Fi in Japan?
Yes. Narita and Haneda airports publish free Wi-Fi services, and JR Central lists specific train and station services. Check the actual operator, location and connection instructions. This does not establish continuous coverage between hotspots or confirm that every station, shop or train has Wi-Fi.
Can I rely only on free Wi-Fi during a Japan trip?
Decide from your actual itinerary and which tasks need a connection between stops. Prepare essential arrival information before departure, check accommodation and transport services, and arrange a personal connection if your plans require online access away from verified hotspots. Neither a hotspot list nor a mobile plan guarantees a working connection everywhere.
What are the free Wi-Fi network names at Narita and Haneda?
The airports publish FreeWiFi-NARITA for Narita and HANEDA-FREE-WIFI for Haneda. Narita describes an automatic connection screen with terms and a security caution; Haneda instructs users to open a browser and follow the screen. Check current airport instructions and signs rather than choosing an unfamiliar similarly named network.
Does every Shinkansen station have the same free Wi-Fi?
No. Use the relevant railway operator’s current service information. JR Central distinguishes its onboard Shinkansen service from station access points and announced the end of service at listed conventional-line stations from March 31, 2026. That notice does not say onboard Tokaido Shinkansen Wi-Fi ended.
