Japan trip preparation · Your own estimates
Japan trip budget calculator
Add your actual quotes and spending estimates to see the trip total and what remains unpaid. A blank cost means unknown, not free. Enter 0 only when you have chosen no cost for that category.
Choosing transport for the trip? Compare a rail pass with individual tickets using your own complete group quotes.
Build your group’s budget in Japanese yen
Use one scope throughout: the same group and trip. Convert any non-yen quote using your own chosen planning rate before entering it; this calculator does not fetch exchange rates or add taxes and fees.
Rail pass or individual tickets: compare your own quotes
Price the same actual group, journeys, dates and seat requirements in both options. Enter full costs in Japanese yen, including costs already paid. Add up the correct quotes for every traveler; this comparison does not apply an assumed child discount or multiply by the traveler count above.
Check coverage separately from the arithmetic
For the nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS, the official scope of validity lists exceptions and additional-charge cases. Its conditions for use require travel within the applicable period and state that the pass itself does not guarantee a seat. Regional passes have their own conditions; check the actual product rather than extending the national pass rules to it.
If your national-pass plan uses Nozomi or Mizuho, check the official special-ticket requirements and include the applicable additional quote. Check eligibility with the issuer separately. This page does not assess a traveler’s status or calculate pass coverage.
The comparison uses only your entries. It has no route database, live fares, pass-price defaults, exchange rates or booking service. It does not change the trip budget above. After choosing an option, include its full cost once in your budget and record any amount already paid separately.
Rail-comparison source guidance checked October 18, 2026. Current quotes and the chosen product’s terms still need checking for your travel dates. The earlier budget-planning source date below retains its original scope.
The formula, with each cost counted once
- Accommodation: whole-group cost per night × accommodation nights.
- Daily costs: cost per traveler per day × travelers × trip days.
- Trip total: accommodation + daily costs + other whole-trip costs + your chosen reserve.
- Remaining amount: trip total − the amount already paid toward those entered costs.
The total and remaining amount apply to the whole group. They are planning amounts, not quotes, a spending forecast or a suggested ATM withdrawal. An average can hide an expensive day: also check when individual payments fall due.
If a cost is not priced, the result shows only the known subtotal and lists the missing fields. If the already-paid amount is unknown, a complete cost total can still be shown, but the remaining amount stays unknown. With zero accommodation nights, no nightly quote is needed.
Check your estimates before relying on the total
- Accommodation quote
- Combine all rooms and check the full amount for your group and nights. Include any stated charges that your quote excludes. Keep deposits separate from the full price.
- Meals, local travel and activities
- Use your actual planned stops and current prices. If an intercity ticket or activity is entered as a one-off cost, exclude it from the daily estimate.
- Other trip costs
- Decide whether your plan includes flights, insurance, intercity transport, connectivity and purchases. Leaving an item outside the calculator does not make it free. Write down those exclusions.
- Uncertainty and payments
- Choose your own reserve and revisit unpriced items. Confirm what is prepaid, what remains payable and the accepted method before a payment deadline.
JNTO’s budget-planning guide covers accommodation, transport, dining and other trip categories. Its examples are not a quote for your itinerary. This calculator uses no official guide’s numeric price defaults. Planning approach checked October 17, 2026; check your actual provider’s current terms.
Before collecting accommodation quotes, use the Japan itinerary guide for 7, 10 or 14 days to allocate overnight bases and hotel-change days. Match the accommodation-night count to your actual stays; the calendar-day label alone does not determine that number.
Use the Shinkansen ticket planner for the ticket you actually intend to buy or already hold. Then separate the remaining budget from cash, card and ATM preparation. Before departure, check your Visit Japan Web arrival code independently of any payment plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How much should I budget for a trip to Japan?
- Use current quotes for your own dates, group and itinerary. This calculator combines your accommodation, per-person daily estimate, other trip costs and chosen reserve. It supplies no daily price or exchange-rate assumption. Costs you leave blank stay unknown, so a known subtotal is not presented as a complete trip budget.
- Should I include prepaid hotels and flights?
- Yes, include their full cost once in the appropriate cost field if they are part of your trip budget. Put the amount actually paid in the already-paid field. A deposit reduces the remaining amount, not the full trip cost. Do not enter the same flight or train fare in both daily costs and other trip costs.
- Is the remaining budget the cash I should carry?
- No. The remaining amount can include card payments, cash payments and your reserve. Check each business or operator’s accepted payment method, then plan cash access separately. A complete arithmetic result does not establish that a particular card, phone or ATM will work.
- Does this calculator use live Japan prices or save my budget?
- No. It uses the whole-yen estimates you enter and runs the calculation on this page. The calculator does not save entries or send them to a price service. Existing site analytics remain in use. Keep booking references, card details and other private information out of the fields.
- How can I compare a rail pass with individual tickets?
- Use complete current quotes for the same group, journeys, dates and seat requirements. Compare the individual-ticket total with the pass purchase total plus all additional costs under the pass option. The separate comparison on this page uses your figures and withholds a cost difference when applicability remains unresolved; it does not select or price routes.
- Does the cheaper entered rail option prove I can use the pass?
- No. Check the chosen pass’s eligibility, validity period, covered services, seat arrangements and additional charges with its operator. A lower entered amount does not establish those conditions or seat availability. Include the cost of every remaining journey before comparing complete options.
