Japan public holidays in 2026 and 2027

Check the calendar date you will use in Japan, then check the places and journeys you plan for that day. A national holiday, a weekend and a venue’s closing day are different things.

Is your Japan travel date a public holiday?

Choose the date as it appears on your Japan itinerary. This is a calendar check, not a flight-time conversion or an opening-hours search.

Official holiday dates: 2026 and 2027

Checked October 16, 2026 against the Cabinet Office calendar (Japanese). The National Astronomical Observatory’s 2027 calendar also lists the announced dates, including the March 22 holiday. English holiday names below are translations.

Use the date to check the actual visit

  1. Check the calendar date and weekday, including any additional holiday shown above. Do not assume the dates are identical from one year to the next.
  2. Open the operator’s current calendar for each building or activity. Check regular closing days, holiday exceptions, maintenance and separate event admission.
  3. Confirm the train or timed ticket you actually need, then keep last entry and return travel separate from the national-holiday label.

For example, the Nijo Castle visitor guide gives different closure rules for the castle and its palaces, including holiday exceptions. Use our Nijo palace entry planner to prepare the building and ticket checks; this calendar does not confirm palace admission.

Prepare the actual train with the Shinkansen ticket planner. For arrival paperwork, keep your trip’s date and traveler details consistent when preparing the Visit Japan Web arrival code.

A date absent from these tables is not proof that a venue is open, a service is running or a reservation is available. This checker does not estimate crowds, prices, waiting time or connections.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many national holidays does Japan have?
Japan has 16 named national holidays. Additional substitute holidays and holidays between national holidays can add dates to a particular year’s published calendar. The tables below include those additional dates.
Is March 22, 2027 a public holiday in Japan?
Yes. The published calendar includes March 21 as Vernal Equinox Day and March 22 as a substitute holiday. Both dates are listed; do not replace the Sunday date with Monday.
Does a public holiday mean a tourist attraction is closed?
Holiday status alone does not establish a venue’s opening. Check the actual building’s calendar, current notices and ticket conditions, including any change to its regular closing day.
Can I use this checker for 2028?
No. It covers the published 2026 and 2027 calendar only. It does not predict future equinoxes or calculate unverified holiday dates. Follow the current official calendar for another year.
