Kyoto · Separate buildings, separate checks

Choose your Nijo Castle palace visit

At Nijo Castle, entering the grounds and entering a palace are different decisions. Match the parts you want to see to the tickets and the date before arranging the rest of your day.

What do you want to enter?

Official guidance checked October 15, 2026. This tool applies your answers; it does not check live availability or verify that a building is open.

Choose the buildings before the ticket

The ordinary individual adult fees are separate from concessions and special events. Swipe the table sideways on a small screen.

Grounds and gardens¥800Neither palace is included.
Add Ninomaru Palace¥1,300No advance reservation required. An adult with a grounds-only ticket can add Ninomaru for ¥500 at the Information Desk inside.
Add Honmaru Palace¥1,800 = ¥800 + ¥1,000Arrange a Honmaru time reservation and separate castle admission. Ninomaru is not included.
Both palaces¥2,300 = ¥1,300 + ¥1,000Castle/Ninomaru admission plus a separate Honmaru reservation. Check both palaces' calendars.

Choose grounds only for an outdoor visit. Add Ninomaru for that palace interior; add Honmaru only if its timed visit fits your plans. A ticket with “Nijo Castle” in its name does not by itself establish which interiors are included—read the actual product.

Three entry windows, three closure checks

The ordinary visitor guide lists castle entry 08:45–16:00, grounds closing 17:00; Ninomaru reception 08:45–16:10; Honmaru reception 09:30–16:00 with its reserved time. These cutoffs do not tell you how long your party needs for a visit.

  • Whole castle: closed December 29–31.
  • Ninomaru: Tuesdays in January, July, August and December, plus December 26–28 and January 1–3. An affected public-holiday Tuesday is open, with closure the next day.
  • Honmaru: third Monday of each month and the next day, plus December 26–28 and January 1–3. The operator says an affected public holiday is open. Check the date’s published calendar for any holiday-related changes.

Check the weekday and national-holiday label with the Japan public holiday checker for 2026–2027, then return to the operator’s building calendar. The holiday label does not establish that a palace is open.

A palace closure does not automatically mean the grounds are closed. Check current notices as well as these recurring rules. Evening events need their own conditions; ordinary daytime admission does not establish evening access.

Put the Honmaru appointment before optional stops

The Honmaru booking instructions say web sales start 30 days before the visit, with same-day web sales only if space remains. A small number of same-day tickets may be sold at the General Information Desk, not the ticket office beside Higashi Ote-mon. Do not rely on that limited fallback for a fixed plan.

For arrival timing, the Japanese original instructions ask you to enter the castle at least 20 minutes before the Honmaru reservation. The shortest walk from Higashi Ote-mon to Honmaru is estimated at 15–20 minutes. The English flow instead says enter the palace 20 minutes before; this checklist follows the Japanese original's castle-entry wording. Add time for ticket queues, your pace and any Ninomaru visit first.

Check the actual slot, both admission products, baggage and your onward commitment before purchase. Honmaru requires shoes off, socks and luggage storage; some rooms rotate for conservation. The published official web-ticket terms prohibit changes, cancellation and refunds after purchase/reservation. This does not establish terms for another seller or product, or a guaranteed entry, wait or connection.
