Grutto Pass: Is It Worth It for Your Trip?
Grutto Pass is worth considering when the benefits for exhibitions you actually want exceed its cost. Counting museum names is not enough: a participating venue may give you free admission to one display, a small discount on another, or no benefit for the ticket you selected.
Use the official Tokyo Museum Grutto Pass rules and your chosen exhibitions to make the comparison. The 2026 pass costs ¥2,500. Below is a dated example where two museum visits do not justify buying it, followed by a worksheet for your own choices.

Start with the exhibition, not the venue count
Make a shortlist before looking at pass savings. For each entry, write the exact exhibition, date and visitor category. Then identify which of these applies:
| Benefit for your selected ticket | What to put in your calculation |
|---|---|
| Admission included | The individual admission you would otherwise pay, less any remaining required charge |
| Discount only | The difference between your eligible individual price and the pass-holder price |
| No applicable benefit | No saving from the pass for that ticket |
| Already free or included in another ticket | No additional saving for the same admission |
The operator’s 2026 admission table is a starting point; match its benefit with the museum’s current exhibition notice. A building name in the pass list does not make all its ticket types interchangeable.
Only include visits you want and can realistically fit. An extra museum added solely to make the total look attractive still uses time and travel money. The worksheet below compares admission charges, so add any extra transport separately if the pass changes your route.
A 2026 example: Tokyo National Museum and Marimekko
This comparison is for one ordinary adult paying the usual daytime rates, with no other free-entry or discount entitlement, on applicable open dates during October 3–December 20, 2026. It assumes admission is available. It is a price illustration, not a same-day route or entry guarantee.
Tokyo National Museum lists Collection admission at ¥1,000 for adults. The operator table gives a ¥100 adult Grutto discount, leaving ¥900. That Collection benefit does not establish coverage of every special exhibition.
At Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum’s Marimekko exhibition, running October 3–December 20, 2026, the ordinary adult price is ¥1,400 and the group rate is ¥1,120. Teien’s Grutto applicability notice gives pass holders that group rate for this show. The discount requires a same-day Box Office ticket; it does not apply online, and those tickets can sell out.
| Selected admission | Individual ticket | Remaining fee with Grutto |
|---|---|---|
| TNM Collection | ¥1,000 | ¥900 |
| Teien: Marimekko | ¥1,400 | ¥1,120 |
| Selected admissions total | ¥2,400 | ¥2,020 |
| Pass purchase | — | ¥2,500 |
| Total admission spending | ¥2,400 | ¥4,520 |
For these two choices, the admission benefits add up to ¥380, so buying the pass costs ¥2,120 more. A different shortlist can produce a different result. This example says nothing about the value of unselected museums.
Check whether you already qualify for less
Before copying those figures, check the baseline you would actually pay:
- TNM Collection is free on November 3, 2026. Age and other eligibility exceptions also apply. Its special-exhibition ticket includes same-day Collection entry, so do not count that admission again as an extra pass benefit. Use TNM’s admission page for the conditions.
- Teien exhibition admission includes the garden. Do not add another garden saving to the Marimekko ticket comparison. Its exhibition page also lists age-related concessions and selected Autumn Night Museum dates when entry after 5 p.m. has different pricing; our ordinary daytime example does not apply to those reduced prices.
- A closed or sold-out visit is not a usable saving. Check each venue’s calendar and ticket conditions before including it. Two museums in an arithmetic example need not be practical to visit together.
For another kind of Tokyo afternoon, keep the Yokohama waterfront and Chinatown route separate from the museum budget. If gardens matter more than exhibition count on a wider Japan trip, compare the different priorities in our Nara gardens route.
Your exhibition worksheet
Copy these rows into a note. Leave an unverified price blank until you read the relevant official page; do not treat a missing price as free.
| Exhibition and visit date | Your eligible individual fee | Included, discounted or no benefit? | Remaining fee with pass | Official source / checked date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Choice 1 | ||||
| Choice 2 | ||||
| Choice 3 |
Individual option = sum of the individual fees you actually qualify for.
Pass option = ¥2,500 + sum of remaining fees for those same admissions.
Choose the cheaper option only after both columns cover the same visits and ticket types. If the difference is small, the purchase method and flexibility you need may matter more than adding another stop. Do not claim an online discount when the venue only applies it at the counter.
The pass is personal, allows one use per facility, and lasts two months from first use, ending no later than March 31, 2027. It cannot be combined with other discounts. There is one adult-based pass price rather than a separate child price; calculate children’s individual eligibility separately before choosing a pass for them. See the official pass rules linked above.
Once your museum choices are settled, plan the evening independently: our Tokyo izakaya neighborhood guide includes Ueno’s Ameyoko area. Food and drink are outside this admission comparison.
Official conditions checked October 9, 2026. The Marimekko example ends December 20, 2026; check a replacement exhibition’s terms rather than carrying these fees forward. No live ticket inventory was checked.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Grutto Pass worth it for two museums?
- The number of museums does not decide it. Add the benefits for your exact exhibitions, after free-entry eligibility and other discounts, and compare them with the pass cost.
- Does Grutto Pass include every exhibition at a participating museum?
- No. A venue can offer included admission for one exhibition and only a discount for another. Check the exact exhibition and date.
- Is Tokyo National Museum free with Grutto Pass?
- The 2026 operator table lists a 100-yen adult discount for the Collection, rather than free admission. Check special-exhibition tickets separately.
- Can I use Grutto Pass for Marimekko tickets online?
- Teien's 2026 notice applies the discount to same-day Box Office tickets, not online purchases. Same-day tickets are limited and can sell out.
- How long is Grutto Pass 2026 valid?
- It is valid for two months from first use, capped at March 31, 2027, for one person and one use per facility.
